This is my ongoing blog about skepticism about the virus called "2019-nCoV", "SARS-CoV-2" or "Novel Coronavirus", and the syndrome it causes, COVID-19.
NOTE: I try to use the most credible sources from experts, with sources cited. HOWEVER: a few sources below are from groups which I myself consider a bit fringe, QAnon types, and conservative sites. etc. Feel free to ignore any source which you feel us untrustworthy.
PERSONALLY, I try to take in ALL sources, because nearly every source has some useful information. If you decide (for example) that FoxNews is an unreliable source, you will miss out on some important critical examination of the Democratic Party. Tucker Carlson is on Fox, and he gets many stories right (RussiaGate, Assange, Syria) and gives good interviews of people (Tulsi Gabbard) who are nearly banned from other outlets.
People are FREAKING OUT over this! Acting out with EXTREME ANGER and personal attacks!
It seems like people WANT to be afraid! It's like people want to be a part of something big. It's like they have strong attachment to the drama and story. If you give them any information to suggest that the story might be a Hoax, or at least overblown (perhaps for a political purpose, or a profit motive), people get very upset and abusive. (as if I were telling them how a movie ends).
If you threaten to take away a story by which someone defines themselves, then they respond in a way as if you were threatening their lives.

I have one FB friend who likes posting a bunch of speculative numbers, based on high R0 values (rate of transmission) or Case Fatality Rates sometimes exceeding 6%.
But if you ASK SOME BASIC QUESTIONS, like
"How is Case Fatality Rate Calculated?"
"How is a diagnosis of COVID-19 being determined?
By biological test (blood, urine, saliva, DNA test, antibodies, etc)?
Or guesswork based on a cluster of symptoms? (e.g., "Ground Glass Nodules")
... and then set up a spreadsheet, and play with the numbers, you can easily see that the alleged 30x increase in Case Fatality Rate of COVID-19 over ordinary flu, being only 1.3 orders of magnitude greater, is well within the margin of error.
For example, IT IS A FACT that the only people who are being tested ARE THOSE who are already expressing certain symptoms. THIS MEANS that people who have mild symptoms, or atypical symptoms ARE NOT BEING TESTED! And this means the COUNT OF INFECTED PERSONS could be 100x, 1,000x, or even 10,000x higher than what is being reported.
Now some might say, OH NO!!! IT'S SPREADING SO FAR AND WIDE!!!
But Steven Hatfill, a well known scientist and developer of bio-warfare agents for the US Military, says that 80-90% of all people will experience MILD SYMPTOMS!
So if the
Case Fatality Rate =
(Number of deaths)
---------------------
(Number of those infected)
and the Number Infected goes WAY UP (since it's in the denominator), then the Case Fatality Rate goes way down proportionally.
So when people give me tables of numbers, projections about exponential growth, and how many people WILL BE DEAD by April, here is how I respond:
Yes, I can see you like to make up a bunch of speculative numbers. Everyone should have a hobby.
But
in fact you do not know the future. Anything can happen. This thing
surprised everyone when it arrived, it could surprise us when it leaves.
The thing to fear IMO is not the virus itself. The way this looks *by the numbers* (I'm a data dude) is very minor.
The
thing to fear is a) global freakout, b) hoarding, c) martial law during
a critical US election, d) the meltdown in the energy and capital
markets (this event makes a convenient cover for an economic crash
caused by, e.g., Peak Oil)

(Advertising is equivalent to military PSYOPS).
4,000 ONLY applies to overtly commercial messages ("advertisements") and does not include the HIDDEN MESSAGES of Industrial Public Relations, Spin Doctors, Industry Flaks, Paid Shills, and Crisis Communications specialists, which are secretly embedded in ALL commercial "news" in the US, and in countless other hidden mechanisms (like internet bots).
So here's a simple question:
