Help fight the Endicott Battery Incinerator!

Hi,

I'm sending this to a) friends & supporters, b) affinity groups, and

c) people who have made comments on this DEC Air Permit application. 

Basic Details

There is a proposed Lithium-ion Battery Recycling facility proposed for Endicott.

It potentially will emit almost 13M lbs of CO2 each year, 18,000 lbs of NOx,

Sulfuric Acid, Formaldehyde, Dioxins, Heavy Metals, Microparticles, Unspecified

Hydrocarbons, Hexavalent Chromium!!!, etc.

Some of these are KNOWN TO CAUSE CANCER.

The facility is about 1/2 mile from my bedroom window!

But Don't Worry!

NYSDEC says there will be "no environmental or health concerns"

and has issued a "Negative Declaration", because, well,
Endicott is already contaminated! And the population is

just a bunch of immigrants, people of color, and section-8 welfare

recipients.

And it's complicated, hard to get support from the environmental
communuity, because everyone thinks we need these
batteries to power our "renewable future", thus, the need

for facilities like this to deal with recycling the spent batteries.

The local politicians are all on-board, and the DEC is playing

hide-and-seek (typical) keeping the community IN THE DARK

while the FAST TRACK this project.

I am a member of WBESC, an environmental group based in Endicott. 

As you know, Endicott has been treated as a dumping ground by industrial actors, and by NYSDEC for many years. 

Endicott has been shown as a cancer cluster by NIOSH/CDC. Many people here are sick and dying. 

Endicott is an Environmental Justice Community, with many poor people living here struggling to just survive. 

Any additional load to our water quality or air quality is if grave concern to the people who live here. 

As usual, NYSDEC has not made copies of relevant documents relating to the permit available electronically via the Internet where people can get access to them.

Supposedly they are at the library, however,

1: I just called the library and they CANNOT CONFIRM the documents are even there.

2: Paper copies cannot be searched for keywords, or copy/pasted, etc. 

3: Electronic copies have the potential to reach many more people, and are more protective of the environment, since no trees are killed. 

Since the charter of the NYSDEC is to protect the environment, the NYSDEC should take the approach which is most environmentally friendly. 

I can see in the ENB, the end of the comment period is Nov 8.

So far, the applicant has been uncooperative in producing the application and other relevant documentation. 

Give all of these, I am asking the following from NYSDEC: 

1: EXTEND the public comment period 90 days

2: We DEMAND that NYSDEC stop treating this community as a Third World dumping ground, and grant us a public hearing which occurs at least 2 weeks prior to the end of the comment period.

3: NYSDEC should make electronic copies of the application, inc. all attachments, exhibits, correspondence, and replies, and all related documents available for download AT LEAST 2 weeks prior to the public hearing.

Seeking house-sit, apt, or room in Greater Binghamton (Broome Co NY)

I'm still hoping to find a house-sit, or an apt, or even a room for rent (cheap or free) ideally in Union (Endicott, Endwell, JC), Vestal, or Binghamton for about 6 mos.

(I prefer in the valley and not up a huge hill, as I only have a bicycle. But I'm considering Any/All Offers!!)

For a shared space, prefer in a vegetarian household, and/or someone familiar with, and supportive of my work, but at this point, I'm not fussy!!

Friends, I am Seeking Cheap or Free Housing in 

IDEALLY: Endicott/Vestal/Endwell area, 

Less ideal: Binghamton/JC, elsewhere

 ... I am basically, homeless.

I can reasonably afford about $200/mo. reliably. I can pay up to $600/mo (inc. utilities), but my income is very spotty (as I largely rely on donations), so I am often late. I need a landlord who understands this.

I have been dealt 4 or 5 major blows simultaneously.

★ Some are legal matters (relating to my activist work) which I cannot discuss. 

★ I am presently faced with eviction THIS WEEK. I have to have my things out by Wednesday. (I thought I had a lead on a place, but it fell through.)

★ My 23 y/o car is nearly undrivable. Many serious problems. Ready for scrap. 

★ I have very low income. I presently work p/t for a small environmental NGO, but it only pays ~$500/mo. My basic living expenses now are about $1200/mo. 

★ YES I plan on getting another job to supplement my income, but this is complicated: 

★ I have an obligation to complete a public service project which will take about 3 months to finish of full time work. My deficit now for basic living expenses is about $700/mo, so this budget is about $2k.  Working a normal job will not allow me to complete it. I've already missed a deadline. This (tangentially) relates to the legal matter which I cannot discuss, so I can't really tell you all the details. 

★ Finding a job (like finding an apt) takes time. Right now I am scrambling to figure out an emergency ditch-out plan to keep myself alive. 

★ Right now, my plan is something like: Stuff everything I care about into storage, and find a cheap motel/efficiency by the night/week. This will rapidly deplete the little cash I have.

I really could use some help, especially from someone familiar with, and supportive of my work. 

Ideally, I could use a 2 bedroom w/storage. 

(the 2nd bedroom for office/studio). 

Less ideally, I'll take just about anything, an efficiency, a bedroom, a couch. 

Or else, just some $ for a motel for a few nights are appreciated.

Many thanks! + Last update for a while

First I want to express extreme gratitude to EVERYONE who

a) donated money to help me

b) offered kind words of appreciation

c) shared by cry for help on email lists / social media

d) just sent prayers or best intentions

I received about 1/3 of what I needed.

($1700 of $5000).

Junk Car

And that $5k does not include the $400 I blew

trying to get my 23 y/o car back on the road.

It needs a ton of work, brakes, steering...

But the biggest issue is a blown rear engine seal.

It leaks oil out as fast as I put it in. I got it back to

Endicott, but it's basically not drivable (except

very short trips).  I think it's heading to the scrap yard.

My Angel Co-Pilot for the day.

Even though the car was a disaster, I must

express my DEEP THANKS to my friend GB

(and bother JB) who went above and beyond

to help a friend in need.

GB was one of my first friends I met in Binghamton.

(Introduced by MT) Probably 2002?

GB is like a spiritual master disguised as a giant Smurf.

It's REALLY DIFFICULT to deal with an emotional basket

case like me, and I honestly spent 1/2 of my time with

him sobbing uncontrollably.

He hugged me, called me brother, gave me pair of

lightly-worn hiking boots, was my co-pilot/wing man the

whole day as we tried to get my car home.

GB told me, through my tears:

"Bill, people love you.

People respect you.

People appreciate your work!
You deserve to live!

Forget the haters!

Don't focus on that.

Let it go.

Keep on going! Things will get better.

You have so much to give!

We need more people like you.

Keep looking forward. Don't look back.

When you mind slips into negative zones,

stories of failure, betrayal, abandonment,

personally attacks...

Go into the woods!

Look at the fall colors!

It's beautiful!

We live in Heaven!"

So even though my car is DOA,
GB really helped me get my head straight.

Spending the day with GB was like an amazing gift,

disguised as a disaster.

I can't thank you enough, my brother.

Some breathing room

But thanks to YOU I now have some working capital

with which to do something.

I don't have enough to find a new place, and I

have to be out by Tuesday. I can't see how

I can accomplish everything I need to by then.

My newer friend EM took me to get boxes today.

I went out for shipping tape, and there I was in CVS.

My stress level is so great, I had trouble with basic math,

trying to figure out the best deal.

"Buy one and get the 2nd at Half Price!"

To hell with that! I just grabbed one randomly.

I went for Chinese take-out, and started crying as

I tried to place my order. The poor kid had no idea.

I got some tea and tried to cry softly, facing away,

so no one could hear.

He gave me three fortune cookies.

I haven't open them.

Baby Steps

I know I must focus on baby steps...

one ... thing...at..a...time...

My problems are so great, I have been really

considering riding my bike into the woods and

never coming back! Everyone has to go sometime.

Donate my body to the coyotes.

But then I would be letting down all of 124x of YOU,

who gave me your friendship, faith, kindness,

appreciation, and support over the years.

I KNOW the Earth is hurting.

I KNOW I have skills & talents no one else has. 

I KNOW I have a lot more I can do to help people,

protect water, protect the Earth. 

I know the Earth needs all of us.

I'm reminded of this quote by one of my friends (and heroes):

"It is time now to play the save the world symphony. I don't know what instrument you hold, but you need to play it as best as you can and find your place in the score. So despite my tears of utter exasperation,

I will promise to try to persevere.

FOR YOU, and for the Earth, and for God.

So as of Tuesday, I am homeless.

I have no plan, no place to go, no car.

Maybe a miracle will appear before then.

My emergency ditch-out plan is to stuff as

much as I can into storage, but w/o a car or

someone with a truck, even this seems impossible.

Anyway, again... THANK YOU!!

I do not know where I would be without you.

I'm shutting off my computer now.

I don't know when I'll be back online.

(I'll still will have access via my phone for a while)
